Aluta Greetings in the Spirit of Consistency and Revolutionary Struggle!
The attention of the leadership of the National Association of Nigerian Students (NANS), Southwest Zone D, has been drawn to the ceaseless autocratic tendencies and anti-student posture of the management of Osun State Polytechnic, Iree, who have, for over two years, continued to operate an illegal and imposed Caretaker Committee in place of a democratically elected Student Union Government (SUG).
This act of intimidation and systemic silencing of student voices is not only condemnable but stands as a complete betrayal of the values of democracy and student participation in governance. It is a direct affront to the constitutional rights of Nigerian students to freely elect their representatives and determine the leadership that governs their affairs.
We are not ignorant of the manipulative tactics of the school management, especially the Rector and the Dean of Student Affairs, who have continually frustrated the conduct of proper union elections by setting up electoral committees, allowing campaign processes to begin, only to cancel the elections suddenly under flimsy and suspicious excuses. These actions are not just irresponsible but deliberate acts of dictatorship aimed at covering up institutional corruption.
It is now obvious that the management of Osun State Polytechnic fears a vibrant union that will speak truth to power, hold them accountable, and defend the collective interest of the students. Hence, they prefer a puppet Caretaker Committee that dances to their tune, a structure used as a smokescreen to perpetrate anti-student policies, embezzle funds, and gag voices of dissent.
WITHOLDING STUDENTS RESULTS
The Ospoly management has wickedly withheld the academic results of comrades who have dared to stand for justice, and who have spoken up against the suppression of unionism in the school. These comrades include:
- ASHIWEL SAMUEL BAMISE (22/STC/1201 – Faculty of Science)
- OSENI IGE OLAITAN (22/EEH/1262 – Faculty of Engineering)
- OLUTEKUNBI JACOB (22/CSH/1262 – FICT)
- ADEBISI ADEYEMI SIMEON (22/MCH/4452 – FICT)
These comrades have committed no crime other than standing tall in defense of their fellow students. Their only offense was speaking truth to power, demanding that elections be conducted, and calling for the restoration of students’ unionism. This victimization is unjust, inhumane, and oppressive. It must stop immediately!
NANS Southwest is therefore issuing a 5-working day ultimatum to the management of Osun State Polytechnic, Iree to:
1. Release, without delay, the withheld academic results of the above-named comrades.
2. Commence and conclude a free, fair, and democratic SUG election process in line with the student’s constitutional rights.
Failure to comply with these legitimate demands will leave the leadership of NANS Southwest with no other choice but to :
• Relocate our Zonal Secretariat to the gate of Osun State Polytechnic Iree
• Call a World Press Conference to explain our own side to the world and expose the dark games of the management.
• Drag in the good Government of Governor Ademola Jackson Adeleke into this issue.
• Mobilize all progressive forces and comrades from across Zone D (Southwest) to occupy the campus and Abere sit of Government until justice is served.
This is a clarion call to all conscious Nigerian students: An injustice to one is an injustice to all ! We shall not sit idly while students are oppressed, silenced, and treated as slaves in their institution.
It will be good not to test our resolve.
Enough is Enough!
Oppression Must Fall!
Unionism is a Right, Not a Privilege!
Aluta Continua, Victoria Ascerta!
