NANS Southwest Backs POCACOV as IGP Disu Calls for Peace Ahead of Osun Governorship Election

Published: July 4, 2026

As preparations intensify for the forthcoming Osun State Governorship Election, the National Association of Nigerian Students (NANS), Southwest Zone D, has reaffirmed its commitment to promoting peace, youth reorientation, and violence-free elections.

This was made known during a strategic stakeholders’ meeting held in Osun State, where the Inspector-General of Police, Olatunji Rilwan Disu, met with political leaders, traditional rulers, security agencies, community representatives, and other key stakeholders to discuss measures for ensuring a peaceful electoral process.

Representing Nigerian students across the Southwest, the Coordinator of NANS Southwest Zone D, Comrade Adeyemo Josiah Kayode (BILLIONCODES), commended the Inspector-General for his proactive leadership and expressed support for the Police Campaign Against Cultism and Other Vices (POCACOV) initiative.

In his address, the Inspector-General reiterated the commitment of the Nigeria Police Force to protecting lives, maintaining law and order, and guaranteeing every eligible voter the freedom to exercise their constitutional right without intimidation or fear. He also warned that anyone found engaging in political violence or other criminal activities before, during, or after the election would be arrested and prosecuted according to the law.

Speaking on behalf of students in the Southwest, Comrade BILLIONCODES expressed concern over the increasing involvement of young people in violent crimes, noting that many victims and perpetrators are youths. He called for a collective effort to redirect the energy of young Nigerians toward education, leadership, innovation, and other productive ventures that contribute to national development.

The NANS Coordinator described POCACOV as a timely initiative that aligns with the association’s vision of promoting discipline, peace, youth development, and social reorientation. He urged political leaders to continually encourage peaceful conduct among their supporters and ensure that the governorship election is conducted without violence or loss of lives.

According to him, the ultimate goal of Nigerian students is to build a society where dialogue replaces violence and where peace becomes the foundation of democratic participation.

One of the defining moments of the meeting came when Comrade BILLIONCODES recited a popular student movement gyration carrying a powerful message of collective responsibility:

“We all contributed to all what’s happening in our society.”

He also rendered the Yoruba version:

“Gbogbo wa l’áni ọwọ́ nínú bí agbègbè wa ṣe dáyì.”

The message resonated strongly with participants and received applause, reminding everyone that lasting peace can only be achieved through the collective efforts of government, security agencies, political leaders, traditional institutions, students, youths, and citizens.

In his response, Inspector-General Disu praised the maturity, patriotism, and leadership demonstrated by the NANS Southwest Coordinator. He further explained that POCACOV is designed as a preventive policing initiative that combats cultism, drug abuse, and other social vices through advocacy, sensitization, counselling, rehabilitation, and youth engagement.

The IGP disclosed that the Nigeria Police Force plans to expand the POCACOV programme into schools nationwide to educate students about the dangers of crime while encouraging them to become ambassadors of peace within their communities.

Impressed by the Coordinator’s presentation, the Inspector-General requested that the student gyration be recited once more, reinforcing its central message of shared responsibility.

The engagement concluded with a united call for peaceful participation in the forthcoming Osun State Governorship Election and a renewed commitment by all stakeholders to safeguard democracy through dialogue, cooperation, and responsible leadership.
