August 15: Osun Students Have a Stake in What Comes Next

As Osun State approaches another defining election, the atmosphere around us deserves serious reflection, particularly from the student constituency.
Recent reports of political violence, heated rhetoric and conduct capable of creating fear among citizens are deeply concerning. Students have, in the past, found themselves caught between competing political interests. Yet, throughout these moments, the student constituency has continued to maintain its independence and civic responsibility.
This election directly concerns us.
For the next four years, decisions will be made that will affect education, employment opportunities, security, transportation, youth development and the overall direction of Osun State. Students and young people will live with the consequences of those decisions just as much as every other resident.
It is therefore important that Nigerian students across Osun State come out in large numbers on Saturday, August 15, 2026, and exercise their right to vote for whoever they genuinely believe should lead the state.
Our position as a student constituency remains non-partisan. We are not asking students to support any particular candidate or political party. We are asking them to participate, make independent choices and refuse to become instruments of violence for anyone.
A Call to Security Agencies
This is also a direct charge to every security agency involved in the election, including the Nigeria Police Force, DSS, NSCDC, Amotekun Corps, military personnel and other formations assigned electoral responsibilities.
Osun residents must be able to approach polling units without fear or intimidation. Security agencies must maintain professionalism, fairness and neutrality, regardless of the candidates or political interests involved.
Recent incidents and inflammatory public statements have already created enough tension. Those entrusted with leadership must understand that words spoken during such a sensitive period can have consequences far beyond the immediate political contest.
No election should become an excuse for violence or the loss of lives.
Nigerian students have repeatedly demonstrated their willingness to work with security institutions to maintain peace, including through recent advocacy against electoral violence. We therefore expect the same commitment to professionalism and fairness from the institutions responsible for protecting citizens.
Students Must Remain Peaceful and Vigilant
We will remain peaceful and non-partisan, but we will equally remain vigilant. Any attempt by political actors, groups or security personnel to intimidate students or prevent them from freely exercising their civic rights will naturally attract the attention of the organised student constituency.
August 15 is an opportunity for us to take responsibility for the future we want to live in.
Every eligible student should participate, make an independent decision and allow the collective will of the people of Osun State to prevail peacefully.
